While 2020 put the entertainment world on halt due the global pandemic, the movie industry has moved forward with plans to release many films this year both in theatres and streaming services as an alternative. Disney and Marvel Studios may be embracing that approach now after revealing Black Widow will release this July in theatres and Disney+, with Zack Snyder's Justice League recently debuting on HBO Max. The superhero genre delivers handfuls of movies a year, and it looks like we'll actually be getting a fair slice of them in 2021 (if they aren't delayed). Let's take a look at all the DC and Marvel movies currently confirmed to release for the rest of the year.

Black Widow (Marvel)
July 9th, 2021

As previously revealed, Black Widow, a prequel following the character of Natasha Romanov, will release on July 9th. Originally planned to release all the way back in May 2020, Black Widow suffered a major delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it looks like it's finally targeting a realistic release date. Don't miss out on this one if you're a fan of the character.

The Suicide Squad (DC)
August 6th, 2021

James Gunn's rejuvenated take on The Suicide Squad (following David Ayer's disappointing 2016 film) will act as a reboot of sorts and follow a larger ensemble of the infamous batch of DC supervillains-turned-anti-heroes. Margot Robbie will reprise her defining role as Harley Quinn, but newcomers include John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Michael Rooker as Savant, and Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., among others. With DC films finally gaining some momentum again, let's hope this one is a winner.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings (Marvel)
September 3rd, 2021

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is the next new Marvel superhero to be introduced to the MCU, and sets its sights on a more Eastern-influenced style and vibe. Simu Liu will play Shang-Chi, also known as the Master of Kung-Fu, a powerful wushu fighter. Liu is joined by Awkwafina and Tony Leung as The Mandarin (who many may remember as the unceremonious reveal of Ben Kingsley's actor dupe in Iron Man 3). This might be the switch-up the MCU needs to bring in potentially great and vibrant new heroes to the mix.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Marvel/Sony)
September 17th, 2021

Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the sequel to 2018's film, might not tie into the MCU and instead exists in Sony's little bubble of a separated universe, but it is a Marvel movie nonetheless. Coming to us from director Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will have a showdown between two symbiote titans, Venom and Carnage. Best of all? It will be R-rated. I don't see how it would be possible to do Carnage with a PG-13 setting. Look forward to this bloody square-off later this year.

The Eternals (Marvel)
November 5th, 2021

The Eternals currently sits as a bit of an enigma in the MCU, largely because of its premise finally taking us into the crazier, bolder galactic aspects of the universe (Guardians of the Galaxy aside). First revealed in 2018, The Eternals will now join Phase 4 of the MCU and take us to concepts around the Celestials, and more interesting, heady ideas that Marvel Studios might potentially be taking their series next. This could be the first real stepping stone.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (Marvel)
December 17th, 2021

We've only covered one DC movie releasing this year (if you don't count Zack Snyder's Justice League), but it looks like Marvel is stacked for superhero blockbusters in 2021. The last - and certainly not least - release of the year is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which comes with its own massive hype and theories. Spider-Man will be joined by veterans in the MCU, namely Doctor Strange, but also familiar (separate universe) villains like Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2. Just what is going on here? We'll find out this December.

Note: Unfortunately, Matt Reeves' The Batman, which was originally scheduled to release this October, was delayed, and will now release in March 2022 instead.

Which of these movies are you looking forward to? Let us know!
