The Batman Part II Production Halted After Director Steps Away
Production on The Batman Part II, the highly anticipated and long-delayed sequel to 2022’s The Batman, has been halted after director Matt Reeves had to step away from the project due to personal reasons.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. provided a statement to Deadline confirming that Reeves is stepping away from The Batman Part II to focus on a “family matter”, though the studio says it’s looking forward to “continuing this journey soon.” At this point, it’s unclear if Reeves will return to the project or if another director will replace him.
“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” said the statement. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
The Batman Part II’s very long history of delays has become something of a meme online. As of writing, it’s scheduled to release on 18 February 2028 after several setbacks and year-long delays. It’s set to star Robert Pattinson again as the Caped Crusader alongside returning cast members from the first movie including Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. New cast faces include Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance.
While another delay hasn’t been confirmed yet, many fans are bracing for the inevitable. Amidst a wave of support for Reeves and his family online, there’s fear that Warner Bros. could opt for another release date shift.
Meanwhile, The Batman universe largely remains disconnected from James Gunn’s revamped DCU. There’s been talks about a Batman movie in that universe being worked on, with rumours thrown around that Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles might be up for the role, but we haven’t heard anything concrete yet. The DCU is still navigating a few landmines like Supergirl as its plans are unclear for the future.
