Avengers: Endgame Reclaims Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time From Avatar
The back-and-forth pull for the highest-grossing movie of all time title continues between Avengers: Endgame and James Cameron’s Avatar. Thanks to the recently re-released Avengers: Endgame Encore, which added new scenes that directly tie into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel has reclaimed the top spot yet again.
Before 2019, Avatar firmly held the title as the highest-grossing movie of all time, earning $2.79 billion following its release in 2009. I guess a lot of people really liked alien Pocahontas. Avengers: Endgame passed that number when it released in 2019, taking the top spot. A couple of years later, Avatar was re-released in cinemas to get audiences ready for The Way of Water, and it managed to wrestle back its title.
Now, Avengers: Endgame Encore has yet again pulled the title away from Avatar and only by a few hundred bucks. It recently earned $2.9255 billion worldwide, pushing it a little over Avatar’s previous $2.9237 billion haul. Despite the box office tug-o-war between the two movies, Disney ultimately wins in the end as both franchises are owned by the company.
The Avatar franchise seemed like a big money-printing machine and for the most part, that’s still true. While it didn’t surpass its predecessor, 2022’s The Way of Water still ended up earning $2.3 billion worldwide. Last year’s Avatar: Fire and Ash failed to attract as many cinema-goers, only earning $1.4 billion. That’s no small number to scoff at but for an Avatar movie, it was probably disappointing for Disney executives and could be a sign that the Avatar franchise is losing steam.
The 20th anniversary of Avatar is coming up in 2029 and we’d bet good money on it getting another celebratory re-release, giving it a third crack at reclaiming the highest-grossing movie of all time mantle from Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Endgame Encore is now showing in cinemas worldwide.
