After weeks of testing for Xbox Insiders, the company’s disc-to-digital feature is finally available to all users. This enables players to turn their physical game library into digital licenses that can be played on their consoles and PC without needing to insert the disc.

Xbox’s disc-to-digital move was received warmly by the gaming community who saw it as a reasonable alternative to abandoning discs entirely like Sony has. Players simply need to insert their Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs into an Xbox console with a hard drive and obtain a digital license that allows them to play the selected game without inserting the disc. This license is registered to your profile and if the disc is traded in or used elsewhere, the license is revoked and passed to the next user.

As of writing, over 800 games have been verified to work with disc-to-digital. However, several publishers have opted out of the program, including Bandai Namco, Square Enix and Ubisoft. This means any game published by the aforementioned publishers will be incompatible and won’t work, at least for now. This includes all of the Dark Souls, Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy titles which sadly can’t be turned into digital licenses, according to testing.

On the bright side, games that were once thought to be delisted, such as Forza Horizon 4, have been verified to work with disc-to-digital. This allows you to keep a digital version of the game on your console or PC forever, unless you sell it or it’s used by another player. It’s a modest step for game preservation, even if it still has some guardrails in place.

In related news, Xbox is also testing further customisation options for players on Xbox Series X/S, allowing them to choose a custom start-up animations. Remote Play is also receiving a resolution boost to 1440p. These features should also roll out in the coming weeks.
