The first reviews for Godzilla Minus Zero are in following early screenings and most critics agree that it’s a bigger, better sequel that manages to balance the same incredible human drama from its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, with spectacular visual effects and monster mayhem. Most are in agreement that it’s better than Minus One, though some have reservations as well.
As of writing, Godzilla Minus Zero has a 95% approval rating on the review aggregate website, RottenTomatoes, based on 22 reviews thus far. However, that percentage is expected to go up or down as more reviews pour in. The early reviews arrive over a month from its release, showing some level of confidence in the project from Toho. Here’s what the critics are saying.
Godzilla Minus Zero Review Roundup
Reuben Baron from Anime News Network gave Godzilla Minus Zero a score of A-, stating:
“Minus Zero ends up being a darker movie than Minus One. Its mission is less one of heroic redemption and more entangled with complications. If Minus One was Star Wars, Minus Zero is The Empire Strikes Back.”
“It proves there are plenty of ways to keep exploring this franchise, let alone imbue it with sincerity, character, and proper consideration of relevant themes. This movie is also a blast for Kaiju fans who want to see insane kaiju action at its finest.”
“Bold, audacious, and angry in ways Hollywood blockbusters are never allowed to be, Takashi Yamazaki has crafted a rare sequel that delivers a different kind of thrill than its predecessor. It’s a staggering achievement in its own right.”
“Yamazaki’s narrative ambitions and emotional clarity keep the film from feeling false, manipulative, or distracting. Every jaw dropped, eye widened, and tear shed is earned.”
“While something is lost from the wider scope, much is also gained, resulting in a film that might be even more powerfully emotionally affecting than Minus One.”
“Yamazaki-san has delivered another stunner of a Godzilla movie, one that’s even better than Godzilla Minus One in every way.”
