Ape Escape Might Be Making a Comeback at PlayStation
Ape Escape is one of those legendary PlayStation IPs from simpler times. The last time the franchise made an appearance on Sony’s consoles was on PS3 with PlayStation Move Ape Escape, though you can probably go even further back to the PS2 generation if we’re talking mainline entries with 2005’s Ape Escape 3. Since then, the IP has been shelved but a new report now gives us hope that the franchise is itching to make a comeback.
The rumour comes from reliable leaker NateTheHate who claims to have heard that PlayStation is bringing back Ape Escape in some capacity, though it won’t be developed by Team Asobi, the award-winning studio behind the Astro Bot games made up of former Japan Studio team members, like many expected. The leaker stated on ResetEra that PlayStation was looking to bring back “some dormant franchises” and Ape Escape is apparently on the revival list.
NateTheHate couldn’t say with 100% certainty if Bandai Namco was involved either, so we’ll have to wait for some official news directly from PlayStation to see which studio is currently cooking up the next Ape adventure.
Team Asobi, honouring the legacy of the Ape Escape franchise, included a level in 2024’s Game of the Year, Astro Bot, themed around the IP and many fans agree it’s one of the best levels in the game. This made Team Asobi an almost natural fit to bring back Ape Escape, especially considering the studio is also made up of former Japan Studio talents that worked on previous games in the series. However, the leaker says it’s not Asobi, which makes us wonder what PlayStation has planned.
While we’re on the subject of reviving dormant PlayStation franchises, a recent report claimed that Naughty Dog had begun working on a new Uncharted game led by the director of The Lost Legacy. It will reportedly release after the studio is done with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
