Mrs South Africa Finalist Shoma Govender Launches Game Over Cancer Fundraiser

by Community Guest Writer on 05 September, 2026

For Mrs South Africa finalist, Shoma Govender, the journey towards the crown has become about far more than a title. Driven by a belief in resilience, authenticity and using her voice to create meaningful change, Govender is using her public Mrs South Africa platform to launch Game Over Cancer - an officially recognised fundraising initiative in support of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

The campaign allows members of the public to make a donation for only R50.00 to stand a chance to win a share of tech and gaming sponsored prizes, while supporting CANSA’s care and support programs, advocacy and education initiatives.

Behind the campaign is a cause that is deeply personal to Govender. Cancer touched her own life through her father who was a cancer patient. Witnessing his journey gave her firsthand insight into the challenges faced not only by the patients, but also by the families who walk alongside them.

“I chose CANSA because cancer has touched my life in a very personal way,” says Govender. “My dad was a cancer patient, and witnessing his journey gave me a deeper understanding of the emotional, physical and financial challenges that patients and their families face.” Through Game Over Cancer, she hopes to reach out and support others going through the same experience. “For me, Game Over Cancer is about turning pain into purpose,” she says. “It is about creating a community where people feel seen, supported, and empowered.”

A Platform For Purpose

Govender entered the Mrs South Africa pageant with a desire to challenge herself, grow as a woman, and use her voice to make a meaningful impact. For her, the competition represents more than the pursuit of a title - it is an opportunity to stand alongside other women who lead with purpose, compassion and courage, while encouraging people to embrace their own stories and believe in themselves and their capability to overcome.

Her own journey has been shaped by both triumphs and challenges, teaching her the importance of resilience and continuing to show up - even when life feels challenging.

“Your story is your strength. Own it, embrace it, and let it inspire others.” - Shoma Govender

Becoming a Mrs South Africa finalist was a moment of excitement, gratitude, and disbelief, but it also brought with it a sense of responsibility. Govender says that she realised that the opportunity was about more than a personal achievement. “It was an opportunity to inspire others, to grow as a person, and to represent every woman who has ever doubted herself, but chose to keep going anyway.” That philosophy sits at the heart of Game Over Cancer.

More Than A Fundraiser

The name “Game Over Cancer” represents resilience and determination to Govender. “The idea behind Game Over Cancer is to bring hope, awareness, and support to individuals and families affected by cancer, while changing the way we talk about the disease.,” she explains. “It is about refusing to let cancer have the final say. I chose this audience because cancer touches so many lives, directly and indirectly. Whether you are a survivor, currently undergoing treatment, a caregiver, a family member, or someone who has lost a loved one, the impact is profound.”

CANSA is a non-profit organisation that has been supporting people affected by cancer in South Africa since 1931. The organisation enables cancer research projects, educates the public about reducing cancer risk, promotes early detection through health campaigns and advocates against known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) in South Africa.

Tech and Gaming Prizes Up For Grabs

The Game Over Cancer fundraiser officially launches on 4 September 2026, with donations available online for R50 each. Each R50 donation secures you one chance in the draw for tech and gaming prizes up for grabs, mostly thanks to lead sponsor MSI South Africa. MSI has supported Mrs South Africa finalist Shoma Govender throughout her competition journey, and the Game Over Cancer fundraiser is the latest step in that partnership. Shoma’s love of technology and daily use of an MSI notebook, combined with her passion for helping others, makes her connection with the brand genuine. By backing the fundraiser, MSI is helping Shoma raise funds and awareness for CANSA while continuing to support her road to the Mrs South Africa finals.

“We have been proud to support Shoma’s journey from early in the competition. Game Over Cancer gives us another way to stand behind her, while using MSI’s place in the gaming and tech community to support a cause that matters to many South African families,” says Dwayne Wolmarans, Marketing Manager for MSI Notebooks South Africa.

Govender’s initiative is also proudly supported by The Nexus Hub and Starlight Hangar. The full list of the prizes up for grabs will be available HERE as soon as the donation tickets are open.

Supporters of this campaign will get the opportunity to meet Govender in person during the campaign.

She will appear at:
- 20 September 2026: Boardgame and Trading Card Day at The Nexus Hub
- 25 September 2026: Comic Con Africa - The Nexus Hub Stand (C570, Hall 5)

Donations can also be made at these events on the day.

The campaign closes on 2 October 2026, with the prize winners set to be announced on 3 October 2026 across Shoma Govender’s social platforms:
