While Crunchyroll remains the biggest legitimate streaming giant, Netflix and Amazon are slowly adding more anime to their repertoire of series and movies to stream. While Amazon Prime doesn’t have as many series as Netflix, the ones it does have are some that are relatively well-known, and aren’t available for streaming anywhere else, such as the well-known series Banana Fish (Banana Fish has since been removed from Prime South Africa).

Below are a few descriptions of five hidden anime gems you can watch on Amazon Prime South Africa:

1. My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren’t Wicked
(2026 – currently airing)

After her mother dies, illegitimate daughter Miya Nakamura is brought into the distinguished Kounokura family, her father’s true family. Expecting to be treated like dirt for not being well-educated and the illegitimate daughter, Miya is surprised when her stepmother and stepsisters actually treat her well! What I love about this currently airing series is that it takes the tropes that surround wicked stepmothers and stepsisters and turns them on their heads. While the stepmother and stepsisters have intimidating auras and have the stereotypical evil mannerisms, they’re actually kind and caring, making sure that Miya is comfortable in the house and with her new family.

2. Your Forma
(2025)
Studio: Geno Studio



Set in a modern cyberpunk world, Your Forma follows Cyber-Inspecter Echika Heida and assistant cyber-inspector Harold Lucraft, an Amicus robot, as they solve mysteries regarding Amicus robots (artificial intelligence androids) and humans. Inspector Echika is different from the other humans in that she has the ability to Brain Dive into the memories of humans and thus learn important facts crucial to solving cases. Harold is the only being that can keep up with her abilities, with most human assistants falling ill after only a few seconds into the Brain Dive. Your Forma fits the current situation of the AI debate rather well, as it discusses the three laws of respect the Amicus robots are programmed with, as well as the possibility of one of them not having those laws programmed and the results of that outcome.

3. Tasokare Hotel

Tasokare Hotel’s concept is similar to that of Death Parade, except instead of two people arriving in a bar to be judged, all of the hotel guests arrive with no memories, and their faces reflect the kind of person they were in the living world. The hotel is set between the living world and the afterlife, and guests have until their memories return to stay and then leave to either move on to the afterlife or return to the world of the living. The story follows Neko Tsukahara, a middle school student who doesn’t remember what happened to her for her to enter the hotel, but has regained all of her other memories. In order to fight her boredom, she offers to work at the hotel and help guests remember who they were before they ended up at the hotel.

4. The Dinner Table Detective
(2025)
Studio: Madhouse



Reiko Hosho is a rich heiress who works as a rookie detective on the side, solving cases that somehow seem to always involve the high-end class she was born in. While trying to keep her identity a secret and solve sometimes impossible seeming cases, she confides in her new butler Kageyama about the cases. He is able to provide valuable insight into solving the cases, while simultaneously ridiculing Reiko’s inability to solve the cases. This is a fun little anime that, while having an intelligent main character, tends to put more of the focus on the butler, who is supposed to be a secondary character. The butler is shrouded in mystery, especially considering how he is able to form conclusions that help solve the cases based on the conversations he has with Reiko while performing his duties.

5. Ichijyoma Mankitsu Gurashi!

Meiko Morita transfers into the prestigious all-girls academy, Amamiya Girls’ Academy, and manages to get a spot in one of the dorms (and gets mistaken for someone else), unaware that the dorm also functions as a manga café. Along with dormmates Rie Amamiya, Marika Suzuki, and Neo Nakana, Meiko learns how to navigate both student and city-life, as well as the shenanigans that running a manga café can bring. This anime is light-hearted, and gives off Ouran High School Host Club vibes (although without the mistaken gender aspect), with a scholarship student being pulled into a rich kid’s hobby to work with them from a school perspective. And the mistaken identity part.
