Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Director Returns to Ubisoft in Major Role
Eric Baptizat, the game director of 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and a Ubisoft veteran of 16 years, has returned to the company following his departure five years ago to work at Dead Space developer EA Motive. Baptizat will now work under Jean Guedson, the head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, as the new Game Director for the brand.
During Baptizat’s tenure at Ubisoft, he served as the lead game designer on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, senior game designer on Assassin’s Creed Unity, and project lead on game design for Assassin’s Creed Origins. He would lead Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as its game director before leaving Ubisoft in 2021 to work at EA Motive, where he served as the game director on the Dead Space remake and game design director on Battlefield 6. He has quite a reputation and Ubisoft wants to reward his legacy properly in the wake of his return.
Speaking on LinkedIn, Guedson stated:
“Thrilled to share some exciting news. After an incredible professional journey, including 16 years at Ubisoft and then leading the critically acclaimed Dead Space remake at EA Motive, Eric Baptizat is coming back to the Assassin’s Creed family as our new Game Director for the brand. Eric needs no introduction in this universe. 16 years at Ubisoft, key contributions to Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla as Game Director, his passion for gameplay craft and his deep connection to this franchise speak for themselves. Seeing someone with his expertise, his rigor, and his collaborative spirit step into this role fills me with confidence and honestly, a lot of excitement, for what’s ahead for the brand. Welcome back, Eric. We’re so glad to have you home.”
The Assassin’s Creed franchise is still going strong with Shadows, the recently released Black Flag Resynced and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe in the pipeline. Under Ubisoft’s new company structure, Vantage Studios will oversee future Assassin’s Creed releases.
