The recently released PlayStation ports for Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 have sold 11 million copies combined and made nearly half a billion dollars in profits. The ports were developed by Iron Galaxy but most of the games’ DNA remained unchanged, which was kind of the whole point as they weren’t sold as traditional remasters or significant upgrades outside of minor technical and visual improvements.
That didn’t stop PlayStation players from enjoying a bit of sweet nostalgia as 11 million collective copies were sold of the Black Ops 1 and 2 ports since launching on PS4 and PS5 last month (according to industry analyst Rhys Elliott). Iron Galaxy’s tweaks were very minor visual improvements and some technical fine-tuning to bring it up to 1080p but for the most part, these ports were left untouched to give players the old-school experience as they remembered it.
Both games featured the single-player campaign, multiplayer modes and Zombies. Each title sells for $40 or R749 each on the PlayStation Store, though they’re currently on sale for R374,50 which is still quite a pretty penny to pay for unaltered games that are older than most of Call of Duty’s player base these days.
In related news, Activision and developer Infinity Ward are gearing up to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 this October (not to be confused with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare). It will also mark the first Call of Duty title in a long while to receive a day and date release on a Nintendo platform alongside PlayStation, Xbox and PC as it will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch.
Modern Warfare 4 will release on 23 October 2026 so it avoids clashing with Grand Theft Auto 6, which seems to be occupying and dominating the November window. GTA 6 is projected to sell over 37 million copies within its first week alone, so it would be wise for this year’s Call of Duty entry to step aside.
