Phantom Blade Zero has sold more than four million copies within its first 72 hours, marking an incredible debut for the Chinese developer’s ambitious action RPG.
The studio confirmed the milestone through the game’s official social media channels, thanking players for their support following its launch on 29 October.
The game is available digitally on PlayStation 5 and PC, through Steam and the Epic Games Store. S-GAME hasn’t provided a breakdown of sales between the different platforms, but crossing four million copies in just three days is a massive achievement for an original franchise.
The announcement also comes after the game accumulated more than three million wishlists across PS5 and PC ahead of launch, suggesting there was already considerable interest before players could get their hands on it.
Sales are only part of the story. Phantom Blade Zero has also attracted a massive audience on Steam, where its concurrent player numbers have continued climbing since launch.
According to SteamDB, the game reached an all-time peak of 833,921 concurrent players on 1 November, placing it among the most-played games in Steam’s history. It also briefly became the platform’s 14th most-played game ever by peak concurrent players.
The game has also received a positive response from PC players. Its Steam user reviews currently carry a Very Positive rating, with approximately 89% of reviews recommending the game.
That’s a strong start for a new franchise competing in a genre dominated by established names such as Elden Ring, Nioh and Black Myth: Wukong.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Phantom Blade Zero combines traditional Chinese Wuxia storytelling with fast-paced martial arts combat and a distinctive industrial fantasy aesthetic that S-GAME describes as “Kungfupunk”.
Players take control of Soul, an elite assassin who is framed for the murder of his master and left with only 66 days to live. Hunted by former allies, he must uncover the conspiracy behind his master’s death while fighting his way through a dangerous world filled with powerful enemies.
Combat is the game’s biggest attraction, featuring more than 30 weapons and over 20 unique Phantom Edges that can be mixed and matched to create different fighting styles. The game also features more than 50 challenging boss encounters, with its cinematic combat choreography drawing inspiration from classic Hong Kong martial arts films.
The result is an action game that places considerable emphasis on speed, precision, weapon variety and spectacular boss encounters. In case you missed it, read our full review where we awarded it 9.5/10.
The four-million milestone is particularly significant because Phantom Blade Zero isn’t an established franchise with decades of recognition behind it. S-GAME has managed to build an entirely new IP and turn it into one of the year’s biggest launches.
