A24 is spending an absolutely staggering amount of money bringing Elden Ring to the big screen, with the upcoming video game adaptation reportedly carrying a production budget of nearly $200 million. That makes it the most expensive film the studio has ever produced, comfortably beating its previous record-holder, Marty Supreme, which reportedly cost around $70 million to make.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the Alex Garland-directed adaptation is set to cost almost three times as much as the Timothee Chalamet-led sports drama. It is a pretty significant jump for A24, which usually reserves smaller budgets for its filmmakers. However, director Alex Garland is being given a sizeable chunk of money for Elden Ring.
The budget is also considerably higher than earlier reports suggested. Previous estimates placed Elden Ring at well over $100 million, which had already made it A24’s most expensive production to date. The latest figure suggests the studio is going all-in on bringing From Software’s notoriously challenging fantasy world to cinemas.
There is certainly plenty of material to work with. Elden Ring takes place in the Lands Between, a sprawling fantasy world filled with demigods, monstrous creatures and enough mysterious lore to keep fans debating its story for years. Translating that into a feature film is no small undertaking, particularly if Garland intends to capture the scale and atmosphere that made the original game such a phenomenon.
Garland is directing the film, with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin attached as a producer after helping develop the game’s mythology. The cast includes Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw and Nick Offerman, although specific character details remain under wraps.
In related news, Elden Ring officially wrapped filming back in July this year. The first set photos leaked during the film’s principal photography, revealing familiar locations like the Church of Marika.
The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas and IMAX on 3 March 2028.
