Daft Punk Might’ve Skipped GTA VI But They’re Getting a LEGO Set
Daft Punk might’ve turned down an opportunity to create the original soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto VI with an ‘unlimited budget’ but they can’t say no to LEGO. The set is likely based on the iconic stage setup for the French music duo’s Alive 2007 tour, featuring a pyramid that lit up with a dazzling light show during its live events.
The idea for the LEGO Daft Punk set originated from the company’s “Parking Lot”, a place “where selected Product Ideas get extra review time before a final decision is made” as part of its LEGO Ideas initiative. Creator RobotRock had initially submitted the idea but it has now finally been greenlit and given the go-ahead by LEGO. Naturally, LEGO also had to get permission from the retired robot DJs themselves before going ahead with it, so it’s wild that they agreed while shutting the door on Rockstar Games.
However, while a flashy trailer was released yesterday announcing the news, there’s no official look at the LEGO set yet – only fan models have surfaced online. The fact that it’s based on the Alive 2007 tour is a good indication that it will feature the pyramid stage setup (including the robot figures too), which has become synonymous with Daft Punk’s live performances.
A press release from LEGO further hints at more collaborations between the brick maker and Daft Punk beyond the Alive 2007 tour set, suggesting more potential sets or other additions to LEGO that could include any number of the duo’s creative endeavours across their career.
While Daft Punk turned down Rockstar, another French electronic music duo, Justice, stepped up to take the reins on GTA VI’s soundtrack. The news was announced when the launch trailer for the game debuted last week, featuring a new song “Flower in a Hurricane” from Justice, Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
