Gaming communities are often at their best when they come together for something bigger than the games themselves. That was certainly the case when Game Over Cancer, a great initiative driven and established by Mrs. South Africa finalist Shoma Govender, brought tabletop and board game fans together at Nexus Hub in support of CANSA.

Hosted by Starlight Hangar at Nexus Hub, the event welcomed just over 50 attendees for a board game day where the entry fee was a donation towards Shoma Govender’s cancer-focused initiative. Govender, a Mrs. South Africa finalist, created Game Over Cancer as a way of turning her passion and personal connection to the cause into something that could make a difference.




For an event centred around board games, there was plenty more happening than simply rolling dice and moving pieces around a table. Local artist Lumi Chen, who is also supporting the initiative, provided prize hampers for attendees while showcasing some of her latest products ahead of her appearance at Comic Con Africa 2026.

More importantly, the event gave the local geek community an opportunity to connect while supporting a cause that has touched countless lives. For Govender, that sense of community is exactly what Game Over Cancer is about.




"Sunday's board game event was a beautiful reminder of the power of community," Govender said. "As I looked around the room and saw people laughing, connecting, sharing stories, and supporting a cause greater than themselves, I was overwhelmed with emotion."

She added that the event was about more than the games being played, highlighting the hope shared by attendees and the message that nobody should have to face cancer alone.

Starlight Hangar was equally keen to support the initiative. According to Tony from Starlight Hangar, the organisation was founded to support the local community and immediately wanted to get involved when approached about the event.



"We each have personal stories and experiences with cancer, so we understand the hardships that come with it," Tony said. "Above all, this is a gentle reminder that you are not alone."

That's perhaps what made the event particularly meaningful. It wasn't simply a fundraiser, nor was it just another board game gathering. It was a reminder of what can happen when an existing community uses its shared interests to support something bigger. Govender also thanked everyone who attended, donated and volunteered, as well as Starlight Hangar and Nexus Hub for supporting the initiative.



Game Over Cancer is ultimately built around a simple idea: bringing people together to create hope and support those affected by cancer. And if a few board games can help make that happen, that's a pretty good reason to roll the dice.
