Three Hikers Had to be Rescued After Trusting Gemini to Plan a Hike

In one of the most bizarre stories that happened over the weekend, three hikers who trusted Google’s Gemini AI a bit too much to give them directions and planning had to be rescued after they got lost in the wilderness. The hikers claimed that they simply followed Gemini’s instructions and plans – the AI instructed them to even carry far less food and water than they needed.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the three novice hikers wanted to plan a hiking excursion on Mount Shasta in California. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said they had used Google Gemini to help plan the climb, which ended up giving them pretty bad advice. Gemini recommended they pack far less food and water than required, and even gave them poor directions on their hiking trail.

The group started hiking towards the summit of Mount Shasta at around 3AM on Sunday. Hikers are advised to turn around if they have not reached the summit by noon, though the group kept hiking until they reached the summit at 7PM. Probably continuing to listen to the advice of Gemini, the group descended the mountainous trail but things quickly went wrong. Instead of staying on the Clear Creek Route, the hikers walked through the dark and ended up in the isolated Mud Creek Canyon several miles away.

One of the hikers had injured his knee, forcing the group to spend the night in a steep drainage before rescuers could arrive the following morning. The sheriff’s office advised hikers to always have an offline option for navigation, and call into the US Forest Service ranger station before attempting the climb. They also warned not to solely rely on AI for trip planning, which should be a cautionary tale for anyone who thinks Gemini or any AI chatbot knows better.
