For those of you that haven't played Cronos: The New Dawn, Nexus has it in stock again (and no I'm not shilling). It's a fantastic game and one of the best horror games I've played in a long time. Story is also amazing and gameplay is super fun as well. It's one of the best horror experiences I've had in a long time.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 out for more than a month, fans have been combing through their backlog of games to see which titles quietly got performance boosts and improvements on the new hardware beyond the Switch 2 Edition games. Nintendo hasn’t made a big deal out of this but there are currently several older titles that run better on Switch 2. We’ve picked out ten of the most impressive enhanced games that you can play right now on the new console.
Fans have described the silent upgrades as the new Switch 2 hardware “brute forcing” its performance, resolution and visual boosts for older titles that don’t have the official Switch 2 Edition label attached to them like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the following ten games have stood out to us as being some of the best we’ve seen running on Nintendo Switch 2. They’re in no particular order. There’s currently an incomplete list of these games being compiled on Reddit, but we’ve hand-picked the most impressive ones.
Ten Games That Quietly Got Improved on Nintendo Switch 2
Bayonetta 3
While Bayonetta 3 struggled to maintain 60FPS on the original Switch, it now hits a locked and buttery smooth 60FPS on Nintendo Switch 2. It’s quite a significant improvement, especially for an action-heavy game that involves fast button inputs and flashy combat. Cutscenes are still locked to 30FPS but the overall gameplay experience is now so much smoother on Switch 2.
Diablo 3
If you’re like me and continue to be disappointed by the way Blizzard is handling post-launch support for Diablo 4, there’s always Diablo 3 – which arguably boasts some of the most fun gameplay in the franchise – to fall back on, now in its complete state. On Switch 2, Diablo 3 comfortably hits a locked 60FPS with much faster loading times between menus, letting you get into gameplay faster.
Minecraft
While not the most graphically intense entry on this list, players have noticed that Minecraft can actually exceed 60FPS when running on Nintendo Switch 2, though it seems to be limited to only supported displays. For the most part, players have also reported the game runs at a breezy 60FPS with no issues whatsoever on Switch 2.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus
While Pokemon Legends: Arceus doesn’t get the glamorous 60FPS treatment on Switch 2 (I’m sure Nintendo will oblige with an eventual Switch 2 Edition of the game), it now hits a locked 30FPS with no drops thanks to Switch 2. On the original Switch, Arceus’ performance was all over the place. It had a capped 30FPS frame rate but it constantly struggled to maintain it.
Resident Evil 5 / 6
This one is a double entry but both achieve the same results. On Switch 2, both Resident Evil 5 and 6 hit a locked 60FPS. On the original Switch, both games could technically hit 60FPS but it also constantly struggled to maintain it, often dipping and hovering around the 30-45FPS mark. This made gameplay a bit headache-inducing, though they’re now much better experiences when played on Switch 2.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim is one of the most-played games on the Switch so it makes sense for die-hard fans to carry their journeys over to Switch 2. What you’re getting is still 30FPS, though now it’s mostly a locked 30FPS whereas it struggled quite a bit with frequent dips on the original Switch. However, load times are vastly improved on the Switch 2 with noticeable improvements in the time it takes to enter/exit areas.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Another juggernaut third-party RPG that Nintendo fans enjoy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt got some great performance improvements on Switch 2. Namely, it hits a locked and very stable 30FPS across the board with higher dynamic resolution and much faster load times when compared to its Switch counterpart. It’s still not the most ideal platform to experience the beloved game on but players won’t feel short-changed playing it with Switch 2’s boosts.
Borderlands 3
We can’t speak for the improvements made to the Borderlands Collection yet but Borderlands 3 sees some big improvements on Switch 2. Players can now experience the game in locked 60FPS with the unlocked frame rate option turned on. Players have reported some graphical stuttering issues but it’s not too bad. You’re also getting better load times overall.
Darksiders 3
For Darksiders fans, Darksiders 3 also gets the boosted treatment on Nintendo Switch 2. Players have reported that the game now runs at a stable 60FPS on the new hardware and appears to be locked at its highest dynamic resolution. There haven’t been reports about the previous two games getting the same treatment, unfortunately.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Finally, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga appears to run at a much better locked 30FPS. On the original Switch version, one of the game’s biggest complaints was its fluctuating frame rate. That doesn’t seem to be an issue at all now when running on Switch 2.
