Earlier this month, director Matt Reeves stepped away from the production of The Batman Part II due to ‘personal reasons.’ Since then, many fans wondered if Warner Bros. would end up replacing him with a new director or if the film’s production would be halted until his return. Reeves has now confirmed that Ocean’s 11 director Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to help finish filming and complete the movie.

In a new statement, Reeves confirmed that Soderbergh would be stepping up to take the helm of The Batman Part II, driving home the point that he’s not actually leaving production – he will return for post-production but Soderbergh will help him finish principal photography. “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” he wrote. “I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”

The plot details for The Batman Part II are being kept tightly under wraps for now, though we know it will feature Harvey Dent (played by Sebastian Stan) alongside newcomers to the cast like Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance. A set prop photo from behind the scenes sparked speculation among fans that the mystery villains of the movie might be the Court of Owls, which would make sense considering the first movie put a lot of emphasis on Bruce Wayne’s parents potentially being involved in something greater.

Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman with other returning faces like Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.

The release date for The Batman Part II is still set for 18 February 2028 and it’s not known if the sudden director switch-up will cause yet another delay (among a string of delays the sequel has faced over the past few years).
