The PS5 is becoming an increasingly capable machine for retro gaming, with a new update to the PS5SX2 emulator allowing players to run physical PS2 discs on jailbroken consoles. The development marks another significant step for the community, with the project’s lead developer also teasing potential support for PS3 discs in the future.
As reported by Kotaku, PS5SX2 is a community-developed version of the PCSX2 emulator designed to run on jailbroken PS5 consoles. While PS2 emulation was already possible through the software, version 2.01 introduces the ability to read physical PS2 game discs and copy their contents directly to the console’s SSD. Once a game has been dumped, the emulator can launch it without requiring players to source a separate digital copy.
However, there are some limitations. The PS5’s disc drive can read DVDs and Blu-ray discs, but it cannot read CDs. Consequently, PS2 games released on CD and they remain incompatible, notably the blue-tinted discs. The same hardware restriction applies to original PlayStation discs, meaning players cannot simply dust off their entire retro collection and expect everything to work.
Interestingly, the developer has indicated that a separate PS5SX3 project, intended to bring PS3 emulation to jailbroken consoles, is also in development. Physical PS3 disc support could eventually make the PS5 a more versatile option for revisiting Sony’s older library, although this remains a work in progress rather than an available feature.
For now, PS5SX2 offers another way for enthusiasts to revisit the PS2 era using hardware they may already own. Sony has yet to provide native support for original PS2 discs on the PS5, leaving projects like this to fill the gap. Whether future developments can expand that compatibility further remains to be seen, but the prospect of playing more of PlayStation’s back catalogue on a single console is certainly compelling.
In an age where players are becoming concerned about game preservation and physical discs following PlayStation’s decision to end physical game disc production in January 2028, this is a welcomed step forward, even if it’s technically not legal.
