Capcom has officially confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem began development as an online multiplayer game before morphing into a mainline single-player entry. This confirms an older rumour from regular Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem who shared the same news a year ago.
As reported by IGN, Capcom producer Masachika Kawata revealed in the Biohazard 30th Special Magazine that at one point, Resident Evil Requiem was being worked on as an online multiplayer game. However, the team ultimately decided to revamp it as a single-player title along the way. This somewhat explains the sandbox nature of the Raccoon City sections of the game, which seem fairly large, as if it was purposefully designed to incorporate multiplayer elements or host more than one player.
“Every game is a continuous process of trial and error. For example, with Resident Evil Requiem, [game director Koshi Nakanishi] initially went so far as to develop it as an online game. However, the results of research conducted partway through development were not favorable, so we decided to prioritize the horror concept once again and abandoned the online direction.”
