Michael Bay in Talks to Direct Next Transformers Movie, Spielberg to Produce
Michael Bay is in talks to return to the Transformers movie franchise to direct the next installment. Steven Spielberg, an executive producer of some entries in the film franchise, will also return in a more hands-on role as a creative producer.
Page Six reports that Michael Bay, who had directed the first five live-action Transforrmers movies ending with 2017’s The Last Knight, may return to the series to direct the next movie. He’s currently in talks for a return, though nothing is set in stone yet. Additionally, Deadline reports that Steven Spielberg will also return as a creative producer – a role he had previously served on the original Transformers movie and its sequel, 2009’s Revenge of the Fallen.
Bay previously directed five entries in the Transformers franchise, beginning with 2007’s Transformers followed by its sequels, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, and The Last Knight. The critical reception for the first movie was positive but the sequels have since received a mixed to negative reception from critics and fans. Despite the poor reviews, the franchise still pulled strong box office numbers, but it notably dwindled at the series went on.
For now, not much is known about the new Transformers movie. In the wake of Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen passing away, it’s likely that the next entry will either recast the character or remove him from the story altogether.
Since Bay stepped back from the franchise, other directors have stepped up to direct new, and better-received, projects like 2018’s Bumblebee (directed by Travis Knight), 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (directed by Steven Caple Jr.) and 2024’s animated movie, Transformers One (directed by Josh Cooley). The latter, in particular, is widely considered to be the best Transformers movie by fans.
