GameStop is Selling Used PS5 Pros For $1,400 Ahead of GTA VI Launch
GameStop has lost its bloody mind as the US retailer is now selling used PS5 Pro consoles for $1,400. That’s $500 more than buying a brand-new PS5 Pro, though there might be a method to the madness. Demand for Sony’s higher-end PlayStation hardware is steadily growing ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, and the PS5 Pro will likely offer the best way to experience the open-world game.
Yesterday, a leak appeared on Reddit seemingly exposing an internal message sent to all GameStop stores, alerting employees that it was increasing the price of pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles to $1,400 – a full $500 more than buying a brand-new Pro which costs $899. However, due to the extremely high demand for PS5 Pros ahead of the launch of GTA VI, there’s now a notable shortage of new consoles available in retail stores.
GameStop is fully aware of that demand which is why it’s now raising the price of pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles, with price tags ranging between $1,400 – $1,500 depending on the model. If you want to put that into perspective, you could technically buy two new Xbox Series X consoles for almost the same price of one pre-owned PS5 Pro at GameStop.
Sony is making a big deal about PlayStation being the best place to play GTA VI and the PS5 Pro is the main recommendation. The higher-end Pro already received a price bump a while back as a result of the RAM shortages (going from $749 to $899) though players seemingly don’t mind spending that much if it means enjoying GTA VI in possibly its best state at launch.
However, base PS5 owners recently got the added benefit of QSSR, AI-upscaling tech similar to the Pro’s PSSR providing sharper image quality. Rockstar Games hasn’t mentioned if GTA VI will have QSSR support at launch but it would be a missed opportunity not to have it included.
