Nvidia could be preparing a significant upgrade to its GeForce RTX 5080, with a new report suggesting that a 24GB version of the graphics card could launch during the first quarter of 2027.
According to Taiwanese publication BenchLife, as reported by VideoCardz, the updated card would replace the existing RTX 5080 with 16GB of GDDR7 memory rather than launch as a separate, more expensive option. If accurate, that would give Nvidia’s next high-end consumer GPU a 50% increase in VRAM capacity.
There is a catch, though. Nvidia’s board partners reportedly haven’t received the development documentation needed to begin preparing their products. They’ve apparently only been told verbally that further information is on the way, suggesting the proposed launch window could still change.
The most obvious improvement is the jump from 16GB to 24GB of memory. That additional capacity could be useful for demanding games with high-resolution textures, intensive ray tracing and other settings that place heavy demands on VRAM. It could also appeal to creators working with large video projects and other memory-intensive applications.
The reported configuration could use 3GB GDDR7 memory modules, which have featured in earlier rumours surrounding the RTX 5080 SUPER. However, BenchLife hasn’t clarified whether this new 24GB model is effectively the previously rumoured SUPER card under a different name or a revised product.
Crucially, more VRAM doesn’t automatically mean more processing power. Nvidia hasn’t confirmed any changes to CUDA core counts, clock speeds or other specifications, so it’s too early to judge whether this version will offer a meaningful performance uplift beyond its increased memory capacity.
The rumour arrives amid reports that Nvidia is redirecting supplies of its high-end GB202 GPU silicon towards its more lucrative RTX PRO workstation graphics cards.
According to VideoCardz, BenchLife reports that board partners are no longer receiving GB202 chips for the GeForce RTX 5090 and certain China-specific variants. This could eventually affect RTX 5090 availability, although it doesn’t necessarily mean Nvidia has formally discontinued the card.
If Nvidia does phase out the RTX 5090 while replacing the 16GB RTX 5080 with a 24GB model, the new card could become the company’s top consumer GeForce offering. That remains speculative, however, and neither product change has been officially announced.
For now, there’s no confirmed release date, pricing or complete specification sheet for the rumoured RTX 5080 24GB.
The first quarter of 2027 is the reported target, but until Nvidia provides official details, PC builders should treat this as a rumour rather than a guaranteed upgrade.
