Sony has announced a new Midnight Black version of the PS5 Digital Edition, set to launch in Japan on 19 November 2026. While the sleek new colour scheme will undoubtedly appeal to players who have been waiting for an all-black PS5, there’s a rather significant catch: for now, it’s exclusive to Japan.
The console will retail for ¥55,000 (approximately $350), matching the price of Sony’s existing Japan-exclusive Digital Edition. However, this isn’t a cosmetic refresh of the standard PS5. Like its predecessor, the new model is region-restricted, requiring both a Japanese PlayStation account and Japanese system language. Sony will also release a matching Midnight Black disc drive separately for those who prefer physical games (ironic, right?).
The announcement is interesting for a couple of reasons. Firstly, an all-black PS5 has been a fairly obvious addition to Sony’s hardware lineup for years. The company already sells Midnight Black accessories, including DualSense controllers and PlayStation Portal, making the absence of a matching console somewhat puzzling. Players outside Japan can technically achieve a similar look with Sony’s existing console covers, but that’s hardly the same as having a complete, factory-finished design.

More importantly, the Japan-exclusive restriction highlights Sony’s ongoing efforts to make its hardware more accessible in its domestic market without encouraging overseas buyers to take advantage of its lower pricing. Given the PS5’s rising costs elsewhere, the strategy makes sense from a business perspective, even if it leaves international fans watching from the sidelines.
Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t confirmed whether this particular colour variant will make its way to Western markets. Considering that the standard PS5 already supports interchangeable covers, a global release isn’t essential, but it would certainly be welcome.
For now, Japanese players get another console option. Here’s hoping Sony eventually brings the Midnight Black PS5 to the rest of the world. It’s also worth mentioning that the Midnight Black PS5 will launch in Japan on the same date as GTA VI’s launch, which just so happens to be a driving factor behind PS5 console shortages in Japan.
