Mortal Kombat is no stranger to the movie world. The popular bloody fighting game franchise has seen two film adaptations before; one in 1995 with Paul W.S. Anderson's guilty pleasure, Mortal Kombat, and the other a sequel a couple of years later with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (that we don't speak of anymore). However, with live-action video game adaptations becoming a thing in Hollywood now, and with studios pumping bigger budgets into them, it looks like Mortal Kombat has another chance to set the record straight in the movie world after it was announced that a new film was being made.

The new live-action Mortal Kombat movie, unlike its predecessors, will don an R-rating and feature a more faithful cast of actors portraying the iconic fighters in the franchise. Directed by newcomer Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie is still seemingly on track for January 2021 according to IMDB, though it will probably be delayed to a later time due to the ongoing global pandemic. The massive cast includes popular Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, The Raid star Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, among others. However, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has apparently already seen a cut of the film.
During a livestream on the final day of New York Comic Con (via mp1st), Boon spoke a bit about bringing Mileena back into Mortal Kombat 11 following massive popular demand. He also briefly spoke about the upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat movie, confirming that he has already seen a cut of the film though couldn't comment any further. This is probably a good sign as it means that the movie has more or less wrapped up filming and is well into post-production. Unfortunately, it's hard to say when we'll actually see a teaser trailer for the film as it could potentially face more delays, but we're betting that it won't be long if there's already a cut of the film done.
