A short while back we were allowed the privilege of playing the upcoming Watch Dogs: Legion online multiplayer mode. The online component of the game only officially launches on the 9th of March 2021 as a free update, so we still have a little over two weeks to go before every Watch Dogs: Legion player can get to enjoy it.
So what exactly does Ubisoft have to offer Watch Dogs: Legion fans with the online mode? The answer is, surprisingly, a lot of great content.

Players will have access to a range of activities in the online mode of Watch Dogs: Legion. You can team up with others and take on simple team-based missions or you can attempt much harder challenges. Alternatively, you can also just cruise around London together causing mayhem and we foresee lots of players doing exactly that.
Watch Dogs: Legion’s multiplayer excels in its own way by bringing the overall Watch Dogs feel to the mix.
The online mode of
Watch Dogs: Legion is highly reminiscent of another open-world title’s online multiplayer (*Cough
GTA V Cough*). There’s plenty of parallels that can be drawn here including the teamwork involved with successfully completing missions. However,
Watch Dogs: Legion’s multiplayer excels in its own way by bringing the overall
Watch Dogs feel to the mix. Hacking enemies and other objects while in a team is incredibly fun.
Players who load up the online mode can freely roam around the open streets of London and can participate in numerous challenges and side activities. You can even play darts against each other much like you would in the single player campaign back at the safehouse. This however is only one aspect of the online mode. There’s far more on offer here and how you play the online component of the game is entirely up to you and/or your friends.
The co-op missions feature a hefty amount of gameplay which requires teamwork to complete. For example, one player might need to press a switch while another hacks into a device with a countdown timer elsewhere. Alternatively one player could be left to hack a device while another defends them. Working together like this is fun and while it’s not exactly ground-breaking co-operative gameplay, it certainly is enjoyable in action and there’s enough variation in the co-op missions to keep things fresh when playing together.
Recruitment, which was a major feature of the main single-player campaign, also makes a comeback here in the online mode. Players will be able to recruit new team members and swap to them on the fly. This also means that you can plan and prepare for the co-op missions by finding characters to recruit with specific abilities that will be useful in the missions. Need a getaway vehicle for example? You can simply recruit a person with access to a sports car and then use them in your co-op mission.
Watch Dogs: Legion’s online mode also introduces a new four-player co-op activity known as “Leader of the Pack”, a “Tactical Op” mission. This involves five interconnected narrative missions which are made up on endgame content that will provide quite a challenge to players. In these missions, you will have to work together as a team and communicate with each other to ensure success. The mission involved some intense puzzle solving including hacking multiple terminals and ended with quite a challenging battle against killer drones. Completing this mission was immensely satisfying and players who work together as a team will definitely have fun doing these four-player activities in the online mode.

Lastly,
Watch Dogs: Legion has also included a Player-versus-Player (PvP) activity in the form of the Spiderbot Arena. In the Spiderbot Arena, players will control armed spiderbots and destroy each other. It’s an extremely high-intensity deathmatch free-for-all mode and there’s tonnes of fun to be had here. Chasing around a friend’s spiderbot and then blowing it up with a rocket launcher is truly enjoyable and Ubisoft have done a great job with this mode. Jumping into the PvP and battling it out with each other is a great way to break away from the complexity of some of the co-op missions which require careful planning and execution to complete.
Players will gain experience points and ranks when completing missions and these will unlock additional upgrades for their online characters, such as new DedSec gadgets and gear. The progression system is rewarding and will keep players coming back for more since some of the later unlocks are quite appealing.
Ubisoft also plans to continue bringing more content to the online mode with future free updates such as the Invasion PvP mode so we’re expecting the online mode to really take off once launched later this year.
Overall, if you have
Watch Dogs: Legion either on PC or on console, the online mode is coming soon and will be a literal truckload of fun to play. Especially if you’re able to team up with a bunch of friends and take on the more challenging missions. This is definitely a game to keep your eye on in 2021.
