The One Piece anime got a huge shake-up this weekend when two new movies were announced: God Valley and BAAD. The former is set to release in 2027 while the latter will release in 2029. Most importantly, God Valley will be the first One Piece anime movie that’s actually canon to the source material, covering the huge events of the infamous God Valley incident from Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

The God Valley flashback, which appeared as a lengthy story during the manga’s Elbaph arc, was one of the biggest and most important events in One Piece’s history. First teased over a decade ago, Oda kept several lingering mysteries about the incident including the character of Rocks D. Xebec, Gold Roger’s involvement in the event, and what exactly transpired on the island that led to it sinking into the ocean – and promptly covered up by the World Government.



It seems like the God Valley movie will dedicate its runtime to telling that story as it appears in the manga, which is what many fans speculated would be the case. This also makes it the first One Piece anime movie that’s actually canon, as all previous movies were non-canon, standalone adventures (or at least partially canon like Film Red). The God Valley movie will release in 2027 to coincide with the ongoing anime, though no concrete release date has been set yet.

Meanwhile, BAAD is even further out from release and nobody knows what it’s even about. Fans speculate that it could be a second canon movie that possibly explores another important flashback, with theories ranging from the Void Century and Joyboy to Davy Jones. We do know that its release lines up with the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2029, so there’s no doubt it will be an interesting movie.

In related news, Netflix just announced new cast members that will be joining season 3 of the live-action One Piece, filling in roles for familiar faces from the Alabasta story arc.
