Riot is Ending Development on 2XKO Fighting Game
Riot is ending development on its live-service fighting game 2XKO. The studio announced that while the game will remain playable and the servers will stay online for the foreseeable future, active development on the title will stop at the end of this year.
The studio says it is still working on new content which is planned to arrive in the coming months. This includes two new fighters and other in-game content. However, starting in 2027, players should not expect anything more.
Despite launching in January this year, 2XKO failed to gain a player following. In a statement, Riot says the studio was monitoring the trajectory of the game closely and while many players jump into the game daily and are enjoying the experience, it isn’t enough to maintain the game and sustain it.
“Through the rest of 2026, we’ll be introducing content, feature improvements, and two new champions (Lux and Samira), with the intent to deliver our final bug fix patch in December of this year. After that, servers will remain on to support online play. Offline play is unaffected. We’ll give advanced notice if any of that changes.”
Riot will be bundling most of the game’s cosmetics into purchasable DLC packs, and all characters will also be unlocked going forward so you’ll only need to buy visual content if you’re playing the game. If players have spent any money on the game up to now, it will also be refunded as that paid content will be made free.
“Any content owned is yours to keep. Avatar and player profile items will be unlockable for Credits. This will happen in patch 1.3.1 (September). Our goal now is to do right by the players who have invested in us so far and want to continue playing 2XKO, as well as the Rioters who have poured everything into delivering on this dream. The rest of this post goes into detail on how we got here, what’s changing, and what’s still to come.”
