When pre-orders opened for Grand Theft Auto VI back in June, many correctly predicted that it would do well. However, it came as a bit of a surprise that most players preferred to pre-order the game’s pricier $100 Ultimate Edition over the $80 standard edition. Now, a new report claims that the pre-order sales were so successful for Rockstar Games, they managed to make nearly half a billion dollars already.
This is according to Sensor Tower’s sales tracker for GTA VI, which revealed that Rockstar sold 4.38 million copies of the game since pre-orders opened, generating a whopping $429 million. The research firm also revealed that 77% of pre-orders are on PS5 while 23% are on Xbox Series X/S. It’s worth noting that this data is not confirmed by an official source, though Sensor Tower’s sales tracker is apparently pretty accurate.
With pre-order numbers like those, it’s possible that GTA VI will actually hit its predicted first week sales figure of at least 37 million copies. The game’s Ultimate Edition, which is the best-seller among the two options, offers a wealth of content that you otherwise wouldn’t get with the standard edition. This includes several new shops, cosmetics, vehicles, and even some bonus missions. Players have found it to be a far more enticing package to purchase over the standard edition, it seems.
Not all is well in Rockstar’s lucrative world though. Hackers broke into the company this week and obtained the full map of Leonida as well as several classified, unfinished gameplay videos which have slowly trickled onto the internet. According to the hacking group known as Cyberleek, this was done in protest of GTA VI’s digital-only release. The group is demanding that Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive reverse its decision and provide a physical release for the game as well, or they will continue to leak clips.
GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. An extended look at the game will debut on Netflix next week.
