A newly discovered bug in Borderlands 4 is causing players to lose all of their hard-earned skill points and developer Gearbox Software isn’t entirely certain what’s causing it. There’s also no fix planned as of writing, so players will have to tread lightly for now.

The Borderlands 4 bug is apparently triggered when players disconnect and rejoin a multiplayer session. It’s also possible to come across this bug if you experience a game crash in single-player, though the developer hasn’t nailed down the root cause of the problem yet. Essentially, the bug causes players to lose all of their skill points accumulated in their playthroughs, which is a pretty frustrating bug considering most rely on skill points to hone their build and level the playing field as they progress.

“Players may lose skill points after disconnecting and re-joining a multiplayer session, or crashing in single player. In these instances, they have lost all or most of their skill points. Leveling up more and using the Respec machine do not restore the lost skill points,” said Gearbox on its support page.

Some players on Reddit reported encountering this bug and expressed their frustrations at not being able to fix the problem. “Played last night to level 10. Logged in today to play and noticed my action skill was missing and saw that my character has zero points invested even though he’s level 10 and I definitely put points into the tree last night,” wrote one player in the thread. Another responded, “Same thing happened to me. Had no way to fix it so I deleted my character and started over. I am not happy. But It was the only thing I could do.”

Hopefully Gearbox Software will have answers for players soon. In the meantime, try not to trigger this bug by avoiding the listed instances above.

Borderlands 4 is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It’s set to release on Nintendo Switch 2 on 3 October 2025.
