Logan Director in Talks to Direct Indiana Jones 5

Indiana Jones 5 will not be directed by Steven Spielberg, a new report suggests. The previous four Indiana Jones films were all directed by Spielberg, including Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which received a mixed reception from critics and fans. However, Variety recently revealed that Logan and Ford v Ferrari director James Mangold is apparently in talks to replace Spielberg as the director of the next Indiana Jones movie, with Spielberg only producing.

Variety reports that, after a long development process, Steven Spielberg will hand over the directorial duties to James Mangold. Sources say that the deal isn't closed yet. The decision to hand directing over to Mangold was entirely up to Spielberg, said sources, in order to introduce Indiana Jones to a new generation with a fresh perspective. Harrison Ford, the star of the franchise, is still on board. He recently stated that Indiana Jones 5 would begin filming in "about two months", but that the script and scheduling issues are still being sorted out.

Indiana Jones is one of the most well-known franchises in the cinema world, with the original trilogy in particular being widely acclaimed. It's also the franchise that boosted Ford into further stardom, with the actor already appearing in Star Wars as Han Solo shortly before the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark. 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn't fair well with critics and fans, and became notorious for being the nuked fridge in Indiana Jones' history. Let's hope that Mangold will be able to deliver a worthy follow-up to the series. It's unclear yet if Shia LaBeouf will return.
