GTA IV Cut Content Restored After Someone Found Dev Kit at a Flea Market

In one of the wildest stories in gaming this week, someone found a dev kit containing a pre-release build for Grand Theft Auto IV after purchasing an old Xbox 360 from a flea market in the UK. The buyer, going by the name Jan, said he wasn’t even a big GTA fan but uploaded the beta build online anyway. Fans were quick to comb through the dev kit and have now managed to restore some of the game’s cut content, including fully functional ferry rides.

A fan named Jorby has now managed to get the entire pre-release build of GTA IV working on Xbox 360 consoles, filling in all the blanks with “some retail assets.” GTA IV technical director Obbe Vermeij later commented on X that he had no idea how the pre-release build made it onto a random Xbox 360 console being sold at a flea market but it definitely was not “above board.”

More fans began restoring a bunch of cut content for GTA IV using the dev kit, including a complete restoration of the game’s ferry transport system, allowing players to hop on a ferry and travel around Liberty City via the rivers. Apparently there’s more cut content that could be restored using the pre-release build, though we’ll have to wait and see what comes up next.

In related news, Rockstar Games is full steam ahead on the massive launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year. The game will return to the Miami-inspired locales of Vice City and follow dual protagonists and lovers-in-crime Lucia and Jason. GTA 6 remains one of the most anticipated video game releases in the history of the industry, though some analysts predict it may not make its November launch this year as it could be delayed again. That would surely tick off a lot of fans eagerly waiting but Rockstar Games seems confident it will meet its deadline.

I am still bitter GTA IV never got the Red Dead Redemption treatment and a proper 60fps remaster/port for current gen consoles. Loved this game and especially the interactivity of the game world - even if it was almost as melancholy at RDR1/2 by the end.
