Daredevil Falls as The Kingpin Rises
Defenders ended with Matt sacrificing himself to save New York and attempt to save Elektra, but after taking a cue from the films, the post-credits scene hinted that Matt was recuperating at a convent. That in itself is a hint as to Matt finding his mother who joined the convent when he was a child.
The trailer that dropped today at New York City Comic Con shows that Matt is in a dark place and it's getting darker as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, finagles his way out of prison and back into the hearts and minds of New York’s good citizens. Playing the reformed man, looking to redeem himself through philanthropic works, he enacts a plan to destroy Matt Murdock by framing his alter ego, Daredevil, for various brutal crimes. As he says, "New York needs a villain".
Exactly how he finds out that Matt and DD are one is a mystery, and unlikely to take inspiration from the comics which had a drug-addicted Karen Page betray Matt for a fix. However, the show looks to be taking inspiration from Frank Miller’s classic 1986 storyline Born Again, which chronicled Daredevil’s descent into madness and paranoia at the hands of the Kingpin.
The trailer shows someone equally as skilled as Matt in his devil costume, using his billy clubs to destroy his name and reputation. When Matt confronts him, dressed in his original black costume, he answers Matt’s question of who is with a simple, “I’m Daredevil”. We can speculate till the cows come home, but the safe bet is that this is the Netflix TV universe/MCU version of Bullseye. He could easily wear Matt’s costume and is as skilled at combat and acrobatics as Matt with the additional deadly skill of having an uncanny ability to hit anything he aims at with anything he can get his hands on. As a comic book character, he has a history of impersonating a hero, after Civil War Norman Osborne recruited Bullseye to be the Dark Avengers version of Hawkeye.
Whatever the case this trailer looks like Daredevil is back on track to deliver brutal fights and compelling storylines and I cannot wait for 19 October when all the episodes drop.
