Sony is Now Offering Horizon Forbidden West PS5 Upgrades for Free Following Backlash
Horizon Forbidden West recently received several editions for the game, including the Collector's Edition and Regalla Edition. Here, players would've found digital codes for the full game (despite it coming with a steelbook case), leading many to be confused as to Sony's decision. Additionally, PS4 upgrades were not possible unless you had purchased these higher-tier editions, but now PlayStation has reversed this controversial decision.

In the wake of the fan backlash surrounding Horizon Forbidden West's strange upgrade path, which didn't provide players with a PS4 to PS5 upgrade unless they purchased the more expensive editions, Sony announced that they've gone back on this choice and will now provide PS4 players an upgrade to PS5 for free.
"Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark," said Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan over the weekend. All PlayStation cross-gen first-party titles, including the upcoming God of War and Gran Turismo 7, will allow players to upgrade to PS5 for a $10 price tag.
"Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free," Ryan added.
Much like Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, players looking to upgrade future PlayStation exclusives will need to pay the $10 to do so. While it's certainly a better option than having to buy the more expensive editions of the game, it's still met with some hesitation from the fan base. Nonetheless, Sony's U-turn amidst this backlash is a sign that they're listening, though we certainly hope they take this lesson and carry it into the future.
Horizon Forbidden West releases on February 18th, 2022 for PS4 and PS5.

That said, glad they've responded and, at the very least, removed any confusion over their envisioned upgrade policy. We'll see if Xbox "Smart Delivery", which just seemed like an obvious cross-gen feature at first, still works against Sony's image going forward, or if MS decides to hop on the same boat?
