We live in a world where ridiculous amounts of money are spent on things that we quite don’t know the value of, or just with people who have a lot of money laying around. This is especially interesting in the world of rare Geek merchandise - that sometimes we are sitting with a gold mine of things - but just don’t know it yet or significantly undervalue it. The latter can be said for one lucky Pokémon card collector, who had an incredible pay-day for his/her rare collection of Pokémon cards.

According to TMZ Sports, a collection of 103 Pokémon cards sold for precisely $107,010 (around R1,640,000) at Goldin Auctions this past weekend, who are famous for normally auctioning rare sports memorabilia such as rare card collections for baseball and basketball. The entire 1999 1st edition set was PSA rated at perfect Gem Mint 10 condition - which basically means these cards were equivalent to absolute perfect condition - as if they were just bought straight from the factory they were made back in the year 1999. Some of the cards in the collection were among less than 50 remaining in the world that were in such condition. Included in this collection was the coveted 1st edition Charizard, as well as holographic versions of Blastoise, Chansey and Alakazam.

If you have a bit of time to spare, take a look at the Goldin Auctions website as to how much some of the trading cards go for in the right condition. If you search Pokémon in the search tab, you will see this collection actually had 12 bids on it - which probably had a significant increase on the final price due to a bidding war. Makes me wonder how much my large collection of Dragon Ball tazos might be worth to the right buyers in the right conditions.
