In case you somehow missed it, Sony set the internet on fire last week by announcing that as of January 2028, it would no longer make physical game discs for future PlayStation games. After five days of radio silence online, PlayStation returned to social media this week only to be met with scrutiny from the community. A new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has now shed some light on Sony’s decision to kill game discs and it’s very disheartening.
Schreier’s report first mentions that Sony considers its digital player base is large enough to do without those wanting to continue purchasing physical discs. Retail distribution won’t change – Sony will now send empty boxes to retailers with a download code inside (similar to what’s happening with Grand Theft Auto 6). This way, retailers will only net 30% of the sale price while Sony’s digital code ensures they get 100% of the profits.
Additionally, PlayStation remains convinced that over time, players will gradually learn to accept an all-digital future. The company believes there’s no point in maintaining contact with fans, which explains why Sony failed to make a statement or address the backlash. Part of this stems from Sony’s confidence that many players will remain loyal to the brand and will continue to support their digital games.
Now for the stinger: profits. Sony expects to increase its profit margins considerably by focusing on digital games going forward. Of course, this means less money will be spent on disc manufacturing while more money can be accumulated from digital purchases – at least that’s the thought process here.
As with all reports, take this with a pinch of salt. However, Schreier has a proven track record of reliable industry leaks and information, so this might be worth considering if you’re looking specific reasons behind Sony’s decision to end physical media support in a couple of years.
