Midnight Club 5 Was Cancelled Due to Internal Conflict – Report
While the whole waits for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, reports about other Rockstar Games projects have started surfacing online and it’s not good news for those hoping the developer might revisit the Midnight Club arcade racing franchise anytime soon. According to a new report, Midnight Club 5 was once in the works but it was cancelled due to internal conflicts.
The report comes from reliable outlet Insider Gaming. Former Rockstar senior designer Kris Roberts revealed that a new Midnight Club was in development at one point but it was cancelled due to “non-trivial conflict” between Rockstar New York and the Midnight Club development team in San Diego. Part of this conflict was due to the fact that multiple deadlines were missed during the development of 2010’s Midnight Club: Los Angeles. Another factor was the racing series simply living in the shadow of the more successful GTA franchise.
Roberts explained:
“The perception was we never got the accolades or the reception. The New York perspective was, ‘You’re not GTA’. When you’re the red-headed stepchild project—you know, we’re doing a good job, we’re world-class, but we’re still treated less than. It was challenging.”
At some point during the PS3/Xbox 360 generation of consoles, arcade racers saturated the market. Apart from stable franchises like Need for Speed, it was a competitive genre to stand out, with similar games like Split/Second, Burnout Paradise and Blur – among many others – competing for attention. While Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition remains one of the most acclaimed racing games of the PS2 era, its successor, Los Angeles, struggled to make an impression despite a positive reception from fans.
In related news, GTA 6 is set to launch this November with sales projected at 37-51 million copies in its first week. As it turns out, most players also preferred ordering the game’s $100 Ultimate Edition over the standard edition, which includes a bunch of shops, cosmetics, vehicles and more.
