Avowed is a New Skyrim-Inspired RPG from Obsidian Entertainment
Obsidian Entertainment have a long history in the RPG genre. Some of their earlier works include the excellent Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. Recently, Obsidian embarked on an RPG journey into space with The Outer Worlds, proving to be one of 2019's best games. Following their studio acquisition by Microsoft, though, many wondered what the developer had been working on in secret. Yesterday during the Xbox Games Showcase, we finally got a glimpse of their new fantasy RPG, Avowed.

Avowed appears to be heavily inspired by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, featuring a grim medieval fantasy setting, and a first-person perspective that could allow players to control each hand and assign abilities. In the trailer, it looks like you'll be able to hold magic abilities in one hand, and a sword or melee weapon in the other - very much like Skyrim. Unfortunately, apart from a short teaser trailer, we got nothing else to go on about Avowed. On the other hand, Obsidian have also been working on another Xbox exclusive title, a co-op survival game called Grounded which features shrunken characters exploring a dangerous backyard.
It's not yet known if Avowed will be playable on Xbox One as well as Xbox Series X (given their Smart Delivery support), but judging by the nature of this teaser, we assume the project might still be a few years off from release. When it comes to taking Bethesda's formula and basically outdoing it, Obsidian already have a good grasp on that. Fallout: New Vegas is widely considered to be the best Fallout, while The Outer Worlds was also heavily inspired by Bethesda Game Studios' Fallout series. However, it looks like Avowed might be attempting to take the fantasy route of The Elder Scrolls - and we honestly couldn't be more excited.
