Saints Row Design Director Asked to Pitch Series Reboot to Embracer Group
There’s new hope that the Saints Row franchise might be revived as the design director of the original game has been asked to pitch a reboot of the series to Embracer Group, which currently owns the IP. It’s not set in stone yet but it seems like Embracer is open to the idea of bringing the series back in some form – thankfully, it won’t be a VR title.
Chris Stockman, the design director behind the original Saints Row, revealed that he has been asked to pitch a series reboot to Embracer Group, in the process confirming that it won’t be a VR game. Stockman expressed interest in returning the franchise back to its roots, acknowledging that newer games have strayed too far from that original vision.
Stockman stated on Reddit:
“Guys and Gals, I have hopeful news! I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row reboot! I can’t say anything more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams! Update: it won’t be a VR game. I’m really going back to my roots! I want to bring the Saints Row franchise back to its roots. As you know I directed Saints Row 1 and I feel the series has strayed way too far away from that. I completely understand why they went that way but in the end they kind of painted themselves into a corner they couldn’t get out of.”
Stockmann added he’s “attempting to get the band back together. If this works this will be an amazing story. I hope it works.”
Saints Row was already rebooted in 2022 but it stumbled on release, receiving poor reviews and lower-than-expected sales. The game’s studio, Volition, was shut down soon after. Hopefully Stockman’s pitch lands and the series gets a second chance to redeem itself.
