Razer designed the Viper V2 Pro strictly with serious gamers in mind and as a gaming mouse, this is perhaps one of the finest on the market. The ultra lightweight wireless device is smooth gliding across most surfaces making its usage extraordinarily versatile, while also reigning in on Razer's strengths when it comes to designing mouses recognised by the industry as the top of its league. A pricey tag only holds it back from being perfection.



The Razer Viper V2 Pro comes in both a black and white colour scheme, but we received the black version for review. The first thing gamers might notice is just how incredibly lightweight it is (I feel like the marketing doesn't do it enough justice). Considering its functionality, a breezy 58g almost makes it non-existent on your desk when gaming.

It's also boasts a stunning, low-profile design accentuating a sleek black with Razer's logo etched ever so slightly into its palm rest. The build quality is excellent as well, never feeling cheap despite its light weight. It sits comfortably in the palm of your hand and refrains from putting too much strain on your grip. It's a bit thinner than most mice on the market so those with larger hands might struggle to get a comfortable grip and have to find a sweet spot, though this was never an issue for me.



On that note, the great Focus Pro 30K optical sensor - touted as the "world's most precise sensor", we'll get to why in a bit - is a definite highlight and the secret behind its smooth gliding. I put this to the test on a variety of surfaces including a mouse pad, rough wooden table, and even a tabletop counter that all yielded similar results (though most will probably stick to the mouse pad). You'll find its maximum speed delivering 750IPS and 70G for its acceleration. If you're so bold, you can crank the DPI up to its 30,000 limit, though I found it better on the lower 1,500 personally.

The Viper V2 Pro uses a USB Type-C cable to charge (included in the box), claiming up to 80 hours of battery life. I quickly (or rather slowly) found out this wasn't an exaggeration as it lasted me upwards of a week depending on its usage. This included extensive periods of playing games and doing general work. Thankfully, you can also use the mouse while in wired mode meaning you don't have to wait for it to fully charge in order to make use of it.

Claiming up to 80 hours of battery life, I quickly (or rather slowly) found out this wasn't an exaggeration...

One setback, depending on who you are, is the lack of customisable lighting zones. Removing the RGB on a mouse is never a big deal as it often ends up being intrusive and distracting, especially with some reflecting light on your setup. The Viper V2 Pro opts for a more distinct, professional look without the Daft Punk concert under your palm and it's all the better for it.



However, the Razer Synapse software is included but mostly used to adjust how quickly the mouse enters low power and sleep mode to help prolong battery life. You can access mat surface calibration controls but it does perfectly fine already adjusting itself automatically to surfaces, unless you really want to dig into it.

The Viper V2 Pro offers five programmable buttons which is a bit short of most gaming-centric mice that offer up to eight or more. It takes away a bit of the fun of customising various button prompts depending on the game you're playing, but I've never found myself using more than the five offered which was fine.

The rock-solid Razer Optical Gen 3 switches are responsive and clicky without overdoing it and sounding unbearable.

Now on to the fun part: gaming. I tested the Viper V2 Pro on an assortment of first-person shooters including Doom Eternal, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and some old-school fun with Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake. Whether I was mowing down the hordes of hell or wall-running in combat for vertical strikes, the mouse never let up its performance. The rock-solid Razer Optical Gen 3 switches are responsive and clicky without overdoing it and sounding unbearable.



The one real downside to the Razer Viper V2 Pro is it's price point. At around the R2,800 mark, it's a very expensive asking price. However, for what it offers, there's an argument to be made for it as well. It's going to break the bank a bit but considering it's packing an extensive battery life that actually lasts as long as Razer claims - coupled with the Optical Gen 3 switches that are rated for up to 90 million clicks - it's one that's probably going to last you a while.

The Razer Viper V2 Pro is an exceptional wireless gaming mouse that encapsulates everything Razer does really well with its products. With an ultra lightweight feel, long-lasting battery, and responsive and satisfying clicks that make playing first-person shooters feel particularly good, it's another fantastic addition to Razer's list of devices that continue to blow me away.
