Resident Evil 3 Sales are Underwhelming Compared to Previous Titles

If I can give you some advice. Don’t worry about the time limit. It means nothing in the grand scheme of things. What you can do is, check which ending you want to get and make a hard save before it. Do your ending, reload and just take your time. The timer running out means almost nothing.

Even without doing that, there’s plenty of time in the game to do what you want.

Resident Evil 3 Sales are Underwhelming Compared to Previous Titles

Earlier this year, Capcom released the much-requested remake of Resident Evil 3. Continuing on from the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom hoped that a similar reception would happen with the third installment, but sadly, it didn't receive nearly as great critical reception as its predecessor. Many critics called it a great RE experience (and visually one of the best of its kind), but criticized its relatively short length for the full price of admission. It seems like those concerns have translated to mostly middling sales for Resident Evil 3, with it being underwhelming compared to previous newer entries in the survival horror series.

Capcom recently released their earnings call ending June 2020, where it was revealed that Resident Evil 3 sold 2.7 million copies in 3 months. Comparatively, Resident Evil 2 sold 4.2 million in only 2 months and 1 week, with Resident Evil 7 also achieving 3.5 million in that same time. In past entries, Resident Evil 6 sold 4.5 million units in 3 months, while the bread-winner of the bunch, Resident Evil 5, managed a whopping 4.4 million copies sold in just 3 weeks. For as critically acclaimed as the new wave of Resident Evil games are, Resident Evil 3's sales numbers reflect the game's lack of content and how many took that criticism to heart.

RE:3's 2.7m sales in 3 months are underwhelming compared to recent new RE games. In their first quarters:

RE:2 - 4.2 million (2 months+1 week)
RE7 - 3.5 million (2 months+1 week)
RE6 - 4.5 million (3 months)
RE5 - 4.4 million (3 weeks)

It's worth noting that 2.7 million units in 3 months is still an impressive number to hit for single-player focused survival horror titles, but for Resident Evil, it's simply not enough. Meanwhile, Capcom continues to push forward on the Resident Evil franchise with two major titles currently in development: Resident Evil 4's remake and Resident Evil Village, recently announced at the PS5 event. Beyond that, it seems like Capcom's other IPs are generally doing well. Monster Hunter World is still the unexpected highest-selling game in the company's history, hitting 16 million units sold since launch, with its massive expansion, Iceborne, achieving 5.8 million copies sold as well.

Resident Evil 3 is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
