Sony has revealed the sales for Marvel’s Wolverine since the game launched in September and they aren’t great, at least when compared to Sony’s other heavy-hitting first-party releases. Developer Insomniac Games saw much stronger sales with its Marvel’s Spider-Man games too, though it seems like many players weren’t sold on Wolverine’s adventures.
Sony’s latest earnings report revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine managed to sell 2.4 million copies in just under two months. While that’s no small number to scoff at, it’s surprisingly low for a big AAA PlayStation game that Sony touted as one of its biggest launches of the year. By comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold five million copies in just 11 days, while God of War Ragnarok sold an estimated 11 million copies after two months.
This doesn’t make it a failure by any stretch but it’s probably not the numbers Sony might’ve been expecting for Marvel’s Wolverine. A large part of those slowed sales could be attributed to its mixed reception from critics and players. At launch, Marvel’s Wolverine scored a 76 average on OpenCritic. Many praised its visuals and performances but had harsh words to say about its repetitive gameplay, thin writing and hand-holding mechanics like its infamous fart gas.
Back in September, Sony reported that PS5 sales saw an increase while Marvel’s Wolverine ended up being the best-selling game on the platform that month. That said, people are probably scooping up PS5s ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI and that boost in console sales could be due to Rockstar’s highly anticipated upcoming open world title.
We’ll have to see if Marvel’s Wolverine picks up in sales as PlayStation heads into the holiday season or if those numbers will slow down. Sony hasn’t called it a failure yet so maybe Insomniac Games is safe for now from the dreaded curse of industry layoffs.
