Grand Theft Auto VI is not even out yet and it’s already made more money and sales than a majority of games released this year. According to a data firm, the pre-order numbers for GTA VI were enough to push it over 7 million copies sold – 7.71 million to be precise.
Data firm Sensor Tower, which usually posts accurate data and information, revealed that GTA VI’s pre-order numbers are currently sitting at 7.71 million, with three-quarters of those pre-orders on PlayStation instead of Xbox. PS5 seems to be the dominant platform to play GTA VI, also helped by Sony’s huge marketing push and the fact that PS5s have outsold Xbox Series X/S almost tenfold this generation.
The fact that a base PS5 is currently cheaper than the Xbox Series X could also be an important factor in why GTA VI pre-orders are doing so well on Sony’s platform. The Xbox Series S, despite being the more “affordable” current-gen Xbox option, is considerably underpowered compared to its counterparts and players might be cautious of buying one knowing its hardware limitations, especially for a technically demanding title like GTA VI.
In related news, Rockstar Games has been drip-feeding new information about the upcoming open world juggernaut title. The developer previously stated that it intentionally made the day and night cycle much longer than GTA V’s for added immersion and so that players can enjoy the long sunsets and nighttimes – the two tentpoles of making a convincing rendition of Miami.
You better have enough space to install GTA VI because the file size has officially been revealed to be over 200GB – well, 212GB, according to pre-load info. It’s one of the largest install sizes in current gaming, not counting Call of Duty’s increasingly massive download sizes.
GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
