Princess Mononoke's English Dub Was Almost Written by Quentin Tarantino
Princess Mononoke is generally regarded as one of Studio Ghibli's and Hayao Miyazaki's best films to date, and one of the greatest animated films of all time. It's influence spread far and wide, with its DNA etched into the likes of James Cameron's Avatar, among many other things. The film's excellent English version also deserves some recognition because of its great script by Neil Gaiman, the writer behind heavy-hitting works like The Sandman, Good Omens, and American Gods. However, did you know that Quentin Tarantino was approached first to pen the script for Princess Mononoke's English dub?

Gaiman took to Twitter to explain the process behind writing the English dub of Princess Mononoke back in the 90s. After the breakout success of films like Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino was the first person that was considered to write the script, strangely enough. Gaiman confirmed in a response to a fans question whether Tarantino recommended him after he declined.

It's strange to think how a Tarantino-penned Ghibli film would turn out. The auteur filmmaker has a very unique style of dialogue, most of which involves elongated and drawn out conversations that ramp up in tension. Knowing Princess Mononoke's more subdued and subtle storytelling style (which I believe Gaiman nailed perfectly), it wouldn't be the most fitting screenplay for Tarantino to write. Gaiman was always the ideal choice, and thanks to his understanding of Miyazaki's themes and messages conveyed in the legendary anime film, it turned out to be a fantastic English dub. Other voice talents for the English dub included Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, and Gillian Anderson, among others.
