Microsoft Reportedly Explored The Idea of True Xbox Digital Ownership in 2011
Xbox recently began testing its applauded disc-to-digital feature which allows you to convert your physical Xbox game collection into digital licenses than can then be played on other platforms or digitally without the need to insert the disc all the time. Amidst the confusion and chaos caused by PlayStation’s decision to kill game discs, this was a welcomed band-aid solution to the issue, even if it still has a few gaps in its plans. That said, Microsoft reportedly explored the idea of true Xbox digital ownership as far back as 2011.
This was before the Xbox One launched and the original plans, at least according to The Verge’s Tom Warren, was to offer players “digital gifting, recycling digital games, and the ability to swap discs at retail stores in exchange for a digital version.”
While that idea clearly didn’t make it to market, it morphed into features that almost made it onto the Xbox One in the form of its controversial always-online requirement back then. This would’ve more easily enabled Microsoft’s vision of digital game sharing and trading. Of course, Microsoft reversed those decisions after receiving swift backlash from the community following the 2013 reveal – and justifiably so during that period, though some are starting to now believe Xbox might’ve been thinking ahead of its time.
There’s a silver lining to all of this because Xbox’s decision to leave serial numbers embedded on its discs has now allowed it to experiment with the disc-to-digital program.
It’s hard to tell if Microsoft will revisit this idea sometime in the future but according to Warren, that’s a good possibility. As PlayStation leans further and further away from the idea of true digital ownership, Xbox might be perfectly positioned to return to this motion. Like GOG and its respected game preservation initiatives, it may result in Xbox’s all-digital future being bright rather than bleak.
