Kung Fu Hustle 2 Confirmed, Won't Be a True Sequel But Standalone Story
For some time, a sequel to the unexpectedly brilliant 2004 action/comedy Kung Fu Hustle has been rumoured, though nothing has come of it until now. Director Stephen Chow, who both acted as the lead and directed the original, confirmed that Kung Fu Hustle 2 is in development. Earlier this week at a fan Q&A in Guangzhou, Hong Kong for Chow's new movie, The King of Comedy, the director finally confirmed that the sequel is underway.

News of a sequel began appearing as early as last year, with Chow mentioning that he's looking into developing a sequel. However, until recently, we didn't get concrete confirmation. Chow added some more details about the sequel, stating that it won't be a true sequel to the original, but a standalone story set in a foreign land. Responding to a fan asking if Kung Fu Hustle 2 is coming, he said, "Yes, actually it won't be so much a Kung Fu Hustle 2; it would be a modern-day kung fu story set in a foreign country and have its own standalone story. But it will have a similar direction and concept as Kung Fu Hustle."
At the moment, apart from The King of Comedy, Chow will still work on The Mermaid 2, which is scheduled to release sometime in 2020. It will be a while before Kung Fu Hustle 2 goes into production, and even then, we should probably expect the film sometime in 2022 or 2023 at the latest. Are you excited for a potential sequel?
