Nintendo Patent Reportedly Points to DS Content Coming to Switch and Switch 2
A new Nintendo patent seemingly points to Nintendo DS content coming to Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo is already bringing the Virtual Boy to its Nintendo Classics lineup for the Switch Online Expansion Pack service, but it might also be planning to add DS content to the equation – something fans have been demanding for years.
As revealed by Mike Odyssey (via Go Nintendo), the company recently filed a patent exploring different ways players can display dual-screen games on the Switch and Switch 2. The patent specifically mentions three methods: Dual Screen (Parent/Child Screens), Single Screen Mode (Picture in Picture) and Switch Mode (Switch Between Screens). Players will be able to decide which options suits them best.
All of this points to Nintendo working on bringing Nintendo DS and its potential lineup of classics to its online service, which will likely be made available to all Switch Online Expansion Pack members. The dual-screen patent could also mean we’ll see Nintendo 3DS content further down the line as well, though we think this specifically refers to the original DS.
As with all patents, this doesn’t explicitly mean it will make it to public release. It could remain a patented idea that never sees the light of day, should Nintendo not figure out a good way to make the signature dual-screen capabilities of the DS work well on Switch consoles.
In related news, Nintendo is apparently aiming to produce 25 million Switch 2 units by March 2026 to keep up with the console’s high demand. As it stands, the Switch 2 is currently the fastest-selling console in history, surpassing the sale pace of the original Switch and even PS5 and Xbox Series X/S this generation. Nintendo recently released Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the next chapter in the Legends spin-off series.
