Game Pass Users in Some Regions Will Avoid Price Hike if They’re Still Subbed
Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Game Pass subscribers in some regions will avoid the recent massive price hike as long as they’re still subbed to the service and have auto-renew enabled. This comes after waves of users cancelled their subscriptions amidst the fiasco. Unfortunately, if you’ve already unsubscribed, the new prices will take effect, but those still subbed won’t feel its sting.
As reported by The Verge, multiple Reddit users in countries like Poland, Austria, Indonesia, Germany, India and Ireland have reported receiving a mail from Microsoft recently, stating that the Xbox Game Pass price hike will not impact them as long as they stay subscribed to the service. It’s speculated that the reverted prices in these regions are likely due to regulations regarding price changes for subscription services set in each country.
Microsoft’s email sent to users in these regions reads:
“At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan. Should you choose to cancel your plan and repurchase, you will be charged at the new current rate.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like South Africa will be affected at all by these changes, so we’ll have to wrestle with spending R350 per month for Game Pass Ultimate if we wish to continue staying subbed.
“Our recent Game Pass update remains unchanged,” said head of Xbox communications Kari Perez regarding the unaffected prices in the US, UK and several other regions. “Current subscribers in certain countries will continue renewing at their existing price for now, in line with local requirements. We’ll provide advance notice before price adjustments take effect in these countries.”
The recent changes to the Game Pass subscription model have not gone down well with the gaming community. Not only has the price raised significantly from 50% to 109% in some regions, features that were once staples of the Game Pass service have even been taken away – such as Ultimate members getting discounts on selected Game Pass games’ DLC – replaced with points that can be redeemed through the Rewards program, which isn’t even available in a large majority of territories yet.
A few months ago, Microsoft reported that Xbox Game Pass revenue was nearly $5 billion, staying relatively stable around that mark.
