Far Cry Extraction Shooter Has Reportedly Been Scrapped
Earlier this month, we reported on a leak that Far Cry 7 was taking the shape of a PvPvE extraction shooter. Initially, there was some confusion about whether this related to the mainline game or if it was referring to its rumoured multiplayer spin-off title. A new report from Insider Gaming has shed some light on the matter, claiming the Far Cry extraction shooter has been quietly cancelled behind the scenes.
The media outlet reports that the mainline Far Cry 7 game is on a “good path going forward” after previous reports claimed it was going through a bit of turbulence in development. However, a separate Far Cry multiplayer game, which was seemingly planned to be an extraction shooter, has been scrapped by Ubisoft. This is an important distinction as it puts to rest the previous concerns that the mainline game would feature extraction shooter elements when that’s not the case.
As far as we know, most of the rumoured information about the next mainline title may still be accurate, including the game featuring a time-limit scenario where players will have a limited amount of real-world time to rescue their family, who are apparently being held hostage by a deranged cult.
All of this comes in light of a statement made by Ubisoft in September 2025 where the company said the Far Cry franchise would push more multiplayer elements in the future. If the multiplayer project has suddenly been cancelled, things probably weren’t shaping up as well as Ubisoft hoped it would. That’s not to mention that the Far Cry series has firm roots and stronger appeal as single-player games (with co-op, of course). A Far Cry extraction shooter simply doesn’t sound like a promising concept the fanbase would flock to.
As with all reports, take this with a pinch of salt. It may still be a few years until we see Far Cry 7.
