What a positive review on the game in our company news letter
A fun way to get fit
Typically, your average gamer is sitting in front of a large computer or TV screen, usually plugged into a virtual reality type of setup, and they have their bottom firmly planted on their computer chair or couch.
The only outdoors they see is the one created by the game developers, and the only real exercise they do is with their hands, and the odd jumping out of their seat in anger at a move their opponent has just made.
But some clever developers, whether it was their intention or not, have launched one game that beats all others; it’s fun, competitive, and healthy.
Why health experts are promoting people to play Pokémon Go
In an interview with the Daily Mail Online, a professor at the Miriam Hospital’s Weight Control Research Center, says it’s an exciting development. J. Graham Thomas says the medical community doesn’t have the resources to create something like these developers have, in that it’s getting people off the couch, outdoors, and running around. Thomas hopes others will copy the successful game, to allow more people to follow suit.
In another interview with Live Science, Thomas explains how nice it is to see that technology is no longer confining people to their chairs, and that the changes that are being made are intentionally or unintentionally being used to promote physical health through activity.
Another health benefit of Pokémon Go is the effect on mental health, says medical professional, Dr John Grohl, head of the mental health network, Psych Central. He said in a recent interview that he doesn’t think the developers meant to create such a healthy gaming app, but it’s having a largely positive effect on people’s mental and physical health. Just by promoting people to do simple exercises like walking around, the game can have a huge impact on mental health and mood in general.
The millions of users on Pokémon Go who have their Apple Watches connected to their mobile devices, have even started providing data about their changes in activity levels. And a simple graph collected by the app Cardiogram, shows a massive spike in the amount of daily exercise people are doing when playing the game.
Just a month before the release of the game, Cardiogram showed that the number of people getting more than 30 minutes of exercise or more a day, was at 37%. The day the game was released, the number of people getting more than 30 minutes of exercise a day shot up to 53%, showing it is definitely Pokémon Go that’s having the effect.
And more people are signing up to play every minute.
Is this a fun way to work out?
By playing a game where you’re running around to find Pikachu or trying to master the gym battles, being on your feet might not feel like exercise at all.
It’s different to your normal workout as it’s not a case of setting out a number of weight lifting reps or minutes to spend doing cardio. It’s a completely novel approach to achieving goals, with exercise incorporated into achieving these goals, says Brown University’s assistant professor, Dale Bond.
And that means you’re burning calories, getting your heart pumping, and your limbs moving, all of which contributes to your overall health. Even though you may be walking around and only doing light activity, it’s certainly better for you than sitting in your chair, exercising your thumbs only.
Yet another benefit is that you don’t have to set aside a specific time to play. You can go for a walk on your tea or lunch break to search for Pokémon. It means you can allocate 10 minutes or 30 to this activity, and every little bit counts.
It’s really the first time it might be OK for people to be staring down and walking around with their phones in their hands.
Big benefits of Pokémon Go for kids
Nowadays, kids are sitting in their rooms, glued to their phones and tablets, refusing to go outside, and opting to socialise through texts and videos instead of face-to-face.
An article on Parents.com shows this could change with games like Pokémon Go and others emerging. It’s led to boys and girls running around with their siblings and friends, high-fiving one another when they catch a Pokémon, making new friends, and creating opportunities to meet new people and see new places.
As long as people are outside, enjoying the sunshine, interacting with other people, there can’t be many negative aspects of the game.
What to look out for when playing Pokémon Go
There are some cautions you should take when playing the game:
1. Look out for traffic and always be aware of your surroundings.
2. Make sure you know whether the game is leading you into a potentially dangerous suburb.
3. Look up from your screen on occasion and take in the world around you. It can also prevent excessive neck strain.
4. Play with friends so you’re not alone and vulnerable in unfamiliar places, especially when it gets dark.
While it has many benefits for your health, there are also some cautions. As with anything in life, be responsible when playing the game, so you can continue to play safely and happily.
