Trials Rising was welcomed with thunderous applause when it was announced at E3 2018, bringing the Trials series back to its former glory. However, players quickly became concerned when micro-transactions were confirmed.
Trials Rising will feature Gear Crates, their version of lootboxes, which offer cosmetic items such as outfits, bike liveries, and race poses, and you will receive one each time you level up. You will earn in-game currency that you can use to rerun a Gear Crate, if you are not happy with the original contents, or to buy new Gear Crates. In-game currency is earned by simply playing the game, and it seems that certain special actions will yield more coin.
You can use this same in-game currency, as well as Acorns (bought with real-world money), to buy directly from the marketplace, if you are after a particular item, but everything is still achievable through in-game progression.
You can create your own items in-game, which you can then sell for in-game currency (not Acorns), and other players cannot simply download your items without paying for them. “You cannot have that [item easily] if you haven't progressed enough. If you see unique stuff, you can not only appreciate someone has made it, but also that they have played a lot of the game”, according to Ubisoft.
Customisation in a Trials game is not news, but the addition of micro-transactions has some players worried about how they will be implemented, and the impact that they will have on the Trials Rising experience – which most fans have welcomed enthusiastically.
Trials Rising releases on the 24th of February, on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Loves games with deep character development and a rich storyline. Also, shooty-shooties. Loathes microtransactions. Likes to use sarcasm and metaphors.
